Goodbye 'Ferry Boat Nanna' In our heats always William, Linda, Chris and families Nan was very special to us (Linda, Chris and myself - as kids) as she was the only Grandparent we ever knew. Nan was always to us a independant person of great energy, selflessness and change. Energy: Nan was always quick off the mark and darted along. Our little legs had to work hard to keep up! Selflessness: Nan gave much of her time to charity - Meals-On-Wheels, Legacy and the Sydney Hospital. Nan also gave Mum & Dad a break by taking us kids on trips - to the Gold Coast, Adelaide or the cricket at the SCG. Change: To kids that lived in the same house from birth to 21, Nan's constant changes of homes were a point of fasination for us. Each visit was almost like a vacation to an exotic location. It was one of these changes of home - to Neutral Bay - that resulted in a new name for Nan - "Ferry Boat Nanna" - due to the Sydne Ferries being close by. Nan often visited us in Kiama for the weekend by catching the 'Silver Train'. This was common enough that we joked one time over lunch - just after the 'Silver Train' had gone by - that woundn't it be funny if Nan was on it. Then looking out of the window we saw Nan bustling along to our place with her overnight bag. This memory sums up 'Ferry Boat Nanna' to me - Active and Independent - and how I will always remember her.
