In the tumultuous year of 1960 I was, for a brief time, her first boyfriend and Wendy my first girlfriend. I have treasured this photo for 50 years. It is said that your first love holds a special place in your heart, no matter how transient it may have been. And so it was. She married Mark Collins, a gentleman in every meaning of that word, and no-one could envy his preferment. I knew that she would enjoy a wonderful life in his company and that he would love and care for her all her days. And so it was. I often thought of her and, in many ways, she was my inspiration to be a better person and to succeed in life. My whimsical hopes that one day we might meet again have now been replaced with a certain emptiness and sadness. As Rafael Sabatini stated in his book “The Sea Hawk” – “The love that is never to be realised will often remain a man’s guiding ideal”. And so it was.
